Description

William Buck (ca. 1825 - fl. 1894) was a blacksmith in South Leeds County, Ontario. In the 1871 census, he is described as being a Methodist, of German descent, born in Upper Canada, and a resident in the Front of Leeds and Lansdowne Township, on Lot 4, Concession 1. At the time of the census, his family consisted of his wife, one son, and six daughters, of whom the eldest, aged 20, was a schoolteacher. His 1887 tax assessment (see microfilm slide 0201) noted that he owned $400 worth of property.
This collection consists of William Buck's waste books, which contains rough accounts of his blacksmithing work for various clients between 1854 and 1862 and again between 1879 and 1894, the latter containing an original index of accounts. The fonds also include four loose statements of account for three clients, six personal items (including a certificate of William Buck's transfer from the Gananoque circuit of the Methodist Church in 1877), two small statements of account from 1844 and 1855, a property tax assessment notice from 1887, a 1888 receipt, a black printed gentleman's laundry list of the Thousand Island Steam Laundry, Gananoque, believed to have come from some period of the 1890s.
No finding aid is available. Researchers should note that the somewhat erratic numbering of the pages of the waste book is that of the original and not due to errors in microfilming.
William Buck (v. 1825-fl. 1894) était un forgeron établi dans le comté de South Leeds, Ontario. Dans le recensement de 1871, il est inscrit comme étant méthodiste, d'origine allemande, natif du Haut-Canada et résidant sur la concession no 1 du lot no 4 du canton de Front of Leeds and Lansdowne. Lors de ce recensement, sa famille était composée de son épouse, d'un fils et de six filles dont l'aînée était une maîtresse d'école âgée de 20 ans. Son avis de cotisation foncière pour l'année 1887 (voir l'image 0201 sur le microfilm) précise que ses propriétés sont évaluées à 400 $.
Cette collection renferme les carnets de brouillons de William Buck, lesquels contiennent des comptes sommaires pour le travail effectué à sa forge pour divers clients entre 1854 et 1862, puis entre 1879 et 1894. Ce dernier carnet contient l'index original des comptes. Ce fonds comprend encore quatre relevés de comptes épars pour trois clients, six documents personnels (dont le certificat pour le transfert, en 1877, de William Buck du circuit de Gananoque à l'église méthodiste), deux petits relevés de compte datés de 1844 et 1855, un avis de cotisation foncière pour l'année 1887, un reçu daté de 1888, une liste de lessive pour homme imprimée en noir et provenant du Thousand Island Steam Laundy, Gananoque, laquelle remonterait aux années 1890.
Aucun instrument de recherche n'est disponible. Les chercheurs devraient noter que la numérotation parfois erronée des pages dans le carnet de brouillon correspond à celle du document original et n'est pas attribuable à des erreurs commises durant la reproduction.
