Description
Jonathan Sewell Sr. (1728-1796) was Attorney General of Massachusetts. He fled to England in 1775 and, in 1778, settled at Halifax and became a Judge of the Vice-Admiralty Court of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
His son, Jonathan Sewell Jr. (1766-1839), was a lawyer, musician, office holder, politician, author, and judge. He settled at Quebec in 1789 and, in October 1790, he was appointed attorney general of the province of Quebec pro tempore. In 1793, Sewell was appointed as solicitor general and inspector of the king's domain. He became attorney general in 1795, judge of the Vice-Admiralty Court in June 1796, and chief justice of Lower Canada in 1808. Additionally, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly from between 1796 and 1808, president of the executive council between 1808 and 1829 and Speaker of the Legislative Council, from 1809 on. In response to the War of 1812, Sewell put forth a plan for the union of all the British North American colonies in 1814 to keep the American threat at bay. Sewell married the daughter of Chief Justice William Smith, who was named Henrietta. Their son, Henry Doyle Sewell, became an Anglican minister and lived in England and Constantinople.
These fonds consist of family papers, including correspondence, estate records, poetry, account books and a genealogical chart, documenting the lives of Jonathan Sewell Sr. and his descendants. The fonds contain letterbooks, case notes and correspondence relating to Jonathan Sewell Jr.'s careers as Attorney General of Quebec and as member of the Legislative Assembly. Also included is correspondence from Rev. Henry Sewell that describes his life as an Anglican minister and his travels.
There is a shelf list and a finding aid at the start of microfilm reel H-2553.
