Description

Alexander Begg (1839-1897) was a Quebec-born businessman and author, with a keen eye for observing events around him. In 1867, he travelled to the Red River settlement (Manitoba), initially working as an agent for several Ontario-based businesses. In the 1870s he published several trade magazines ("Manitoba Trade Review" and "The Gazette and Trade Review"). Begg edited the Daily Nor'Wester and the Daily Herald. Between 1877 and 1884 he held several positions in the Manitoba public service, including Deputy Treasurer, and Queen's Printer.
Written between 16 November 1869 and 23 July 1870, Begg's Red River journal covers the events of the Red River Rebellion led by Louis Riel. In 1956, the Champlain Society published the journal as "Alexander Begg's Red River Journal".
Natif de Québec, Alexander Begg (1839-1897), homme d'affaires et auteur, fut un observateur perspicace des événements qui l'entouraient. En 1867, il s'est rendu à la colonie de la rivière Rouge (Manitoba) où il travailla d'abord comme représentant de diverses entreprises ontariennes. Dans les années 1870, il publia plusieurs magazines spécialisés dont le Manitoba Trade Review et The Gazette and Trade Review. Begg devint le rédacteur en chef du Daily Nor'Wester et du Daily Herald. Entre 1877 et 1884, il occupa plusieurs postes dans la fonction publique du Manitoba, dont ceux de trésorier adjoint et d'Imprimeur de la Reine.
Rédigé à la rivière Rouge entre le 16 novembre 1869 et le 23 juillet 1870, le journal personnel de Begg relate les événements de la rébellion de la rivière Rouge dirigée par Louis Riel. En 1956, la Champlain Society a publié ce journal sous le titre de Alexander Begg's Red River Journal.
