Description

The Colonial Office was a government department of the United Kingdom, first created to deal with the colonial affairs of British North America. It was headed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, known as the Colonial Secretary. Prior to 1768, responsibility for the affairs of the British colonies was overseen by the Secretary of State for the Southern Department and a Privy Council committee called the Board of Trade and Plantations. In 1768, the separate American or Colonial Department was established to deal with British North America. The department was abolished in 1782 with the loss of the American colonies. Responsibility for the remaining colonies was first given to the Home Office, then, in 1801, it was transferred to the War Office. In 1854, this office was divided into two and a new Colonial Office was created to deal with colonial needs, and this new office was assigned to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
This collection comprises a selection of volumes consisting of original correspondence of the Secretary of State and the Board of Trade, entry books of letters, instructions, commissions and warrants, sessional papers and miscellaneous documents.
Le Bureau colonial, un département du gouvernement du Royaume-Uni, fut créé à l’origine pour traiter des affaires coloniales de l’Amérique du Nord britannique. Il était dirigé par le secrétaire d’État aux colonies, connu alors sous le nom de secrétaire colonial. Avant 1768, la responsabilité des affaires des colonies britanniques relevait du secrétaire d’État pour le département du Sud et d’un comité du Conseil privé appelée le Bureau du commerce et des plantations. En 1768, un département américain ou colonial distinct fut instauré pour traiter des affaires de l’Amérique du Nord britannique. Ce département fut aboli en 1782 suite à la perte des colonies américaines. La responsabilité des dernières colonies fut d’abord confiée au Home Office avant d’être transférée, en 1801, au War Office. En 1854, ce dernier fut divisé en deux et un nouveau bureau colonial fut créé pour répondre aux besoins des colonies. La direction de ce nouveau bureau fut confiée au secrétaire d’État aux colonies.
Cette collection se compose d’une sélection de volumes constitués de la correspondance originale du secrétaire d’État et du Board of Trade, de registres de copies de lettres, d’instructions, de commissions et de mandats, de documents parlementaires et de divers autres types de documents.
