Description
Alexander Mackenzie (1822 - 1892) was a builder, newspaper editor and the second Prime Minister of Canada between 1873 and 1878. He was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1842. During the early 1850s, he became editor of a Reform newspaper called the Lambton Shield and became a supporter of George Brown (1818 - 1880). Mackenzie was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1861 and backed Confederation. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1867 and sat for a period in both the House and the Ontario Legislature until dual representation was abolished. In 1873, Mackenzie formed the first Liberal government in Canada after the defeat of Sir John A. Macdonald's government following the Pacific Scandal. He served as Minister of Public Works, and his government created the Supreme Court and the Auditor General's office. After his government lost the general election of 1878 to Macdonald, he continued to lead the Liberal party for two more years until ill health forced him to resign.
This collection consists of a subject and author index of correspondence.
