Description
William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737 - 1805), known as the Earl of Shelburne between 1761 and 1784, was an Irish-born British Whig statesman who was the first Home Secretary in 1782 and then Prime Minister in 1782 and 1783, during the final months of the American War of Independence. He succeeded in securing peace with America and this feat remains his legacy. He also served as President of the Board of Trade and Plantations in 1763, and Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 1766 to 1768. The town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, is named after him.
These fonds consist of transcripts which present a selection from the correspondence and other papers of Lord Shelburne relating to the colonial affairs of British North America, particularly the diplomatic negotiations with France, 1760-1763 and 1780-1783. The papers are arranged by topic and chronology.
