Description
Horatio Henry Lovat Dickson (1902 - 1987) was a notable publisher and writer, and was the first Canadian to have a major publishing role in Britain. He is also known for his biographies of Canadian author and naturalist Grey Owl (Archibald Belaney), whom Dickson was friends with, as well as English poet and airman Richard Hillary, English poet and author Radclyffe Hall, and English novelist H.G. Wells. Additionally, Dickson wrote a history of the Royal Ontario Museum. Born in Australia and initially educated in England, Dickson was of United Empire Loyalist descent. When he was 15, he moved to Canada and worked in a mining camp near Jasper, Alberta, where he founded and edited the Blue Diamond Mine newsletter. He eventually studied English literature at the University of Alberta, and graduated in 1927 with first class honours. He also earned the Lieutenant Governor's Gold Medal and a Royal Society of Canada fellowship for his studies. Returning to England after graduating, he became editor of the Fortnightly Review, which had been one of the most important and influential magazines in Britain during the 19th century, and later edited the Review of Reviews. Dickson started his own publishing company, Lovat Dickson Limited, in 1932 and, the following year, founded the short-lived Lovat Dickson's Magazine, which published the likes of V. S. Pritchett and D. H. Lawrence. He also published Grey Owl's book “Pilgrims of the Wild”, and Dickson made him a celebrity in England during two promotional tours in the late 1930s that were hugely successful. In 1938, Dickson sold his publishing catalogue and joined the staff of Macmillan & Company in London, and, in 1940, became a director at the firm. From 1941 until retiring in 1964, he also worked as a general editor there. He wrote about his experiences in this role in his two memoirs, published in 1959 and 1963. He was working on a third volume when he died in Toronto.
These fonds consists of Lovat Dickson's personal papers as well as the papers of Radclyffe Hall and Una Troubridge, who was Hall`s companion. Her diaries are included here, as well as Hall`s and Troubridge`s correspondence and subject files. Also available are some of the papers of Richard Hillary, which Dickson acquired as Hillary's literary executor.
The Una Troubridge diaries are available on microfilm reel H-1996 and part of reel H-1997, and the Hall-Troubridge collection as a whole is available on microfilm reels H-1196 to H-1199. The Richard Hillary papers, which forms microfilm reels H-2923 to H-2925, features a list of contents of the collection at the start of the reels.
Lawrence.
