Lieutenant General Sir Edward Thomas Henry Hutton (1848 - 1923) was a British military commander who, in 1898, became the General Officer Commanding the Militia of Canada, and played an instrumental role in encouraging Canada to participate in South Africa's Second Boer War, which lasted between 1899 and 1902. Hutton's career also included tenures in Australia.
This collection (on microfilm reels C-1218 and C-1219) contains a couple of biographical sketches of Hutton's friend, Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound (1845 - 1914), who was the fourth Earl of Minto and Governor General of Canada between 1898 and 1904. It also contains an autobiographical account of Hutton's role in Canada, South Africa and Australia, as well as letters exchanged between Hutton and many important Canadian or international figures, such as Sir Sandford Fleming, Sir Charles Tupper, Theodore Roosevelt (prior to becoming U.S. president) and various military personnel. The material in the collection covers the period between 1898 and 1920, though mostly the years between 1898 and 1900.
An index of correspondence can be found at the start of microfilm reel C-1218 and runs for 100 slides. This appears to be an exact duplicate of information found in the finding aid.
Le lieutenant-général Sir Edward Thomas Henry Hutton (1848-1923) était un commandant de l'armée britannique qui, en 1898, est devenu l'Officier général commandant de la milice du Canada. Il a joué un rôle déterminant en encourageant la participation du Canada à la Seconde Guerre des Boers qui a sévi en Afrique du Sud de 1899 à 1902. Au cours de sa carrière, Hutton occupa également d'autres postes en Australie.
Cette collection (bobines de microfilm C-1218 and C-1219) contient deux notices biographiques d'un ami de Hutton, Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound (1845-1914), 4e comte de Minto, qui fut gouverneur général du Canada de 1898 à 1904.
