Description

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), Canada's largest and most influential labour federation, was formed in 1956 by the merger of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada (TLC) and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). As of 2013, it represented the interests of over 3 million affiliated workers. The CLC is the umbrella organization for dozens of affiliated Canadian and international unions, as well as provincial federations of labour and regional labour councils.
This collection consists of files from the Organization Department. Begun in 1956, at the CLC's founding, the Organization Department was the largest department throughout much of the CLC's history. It was initially responsible for the organization and servicing of directly chartered local unions, including assistance with conciliations, contract negotiations, and arbitrations; assisting affiliated unions in organizing campaigns and other organizational matters, including strike action and boycotts, preparing organizing manuals, pamphlets, and other aids to organizing work; co-ordinating special organizing committees and campaigns; and facilitating the formation of new local labour councils, and encouraging local unions to affiliate to labour councils. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, proceedings, briefs, charters, constitutions, membership and dues records, certification and conciliation records, negotiations papers, records of votes, lists of officers, collective agreements, decisions, financial records, organizing and strike literature, publicity material, print matter, notes, and other material.
Le Congrès du travail du Canada (CTC), la plus grande et la plus influente des centrales syndicales du Canada, fut fondé en 1956 par la fusion du Congrès des métiers et du travail du Canada (CMTC) et du Congrès canadien du travail (CCT). En 2013, il représentait les intérêts de plus de 3 millions de travailleurs affiliés. Le CTC chapeaute des douzaines de syndicats nationaux et internationaux affiliés, ainsi que des fédérations provinciales de travailleurs et des conseils régionaux de travailleurs.
Cette collection est composée des dossiers du Service d'organisation. Créé en 1956 lors de la fondation du CTC, le Service d'organisation demeura le plus gros service du CTC pendant la majeure partie de son existence. À l'origine, il était responsable de l'organisation et des services rendus directement aux sections locales détentrices d'une charte dont : le soutien en matière de conciliation, de négociations de contrats et d'arbitrage; l'aide aux syndicats affiliés pour l'organisation des campagnes et autres aspects organisationnelles, y compris les déclenchements de grève et les boycotts, la préparation des manuels d'organisation, des brochures et d' autres aides à l'organisation du travail; la coordination des comités organisateurs spéciaux et des campagnes; la facilitation de la formation des nouveaux conseils du travail locaux et l'encouragement prodigué aux sections locales pour qu'elles s'affilient aux conseils du travail. Ces dossiers contiennent de la correspondance, des notes de services, des rapports, des procès-verbaux, des actes de conférences, des mémoires, des chartes, des constitutions, des documents concernant les membres et les cotisations, des documents relatifs aux certifications et aux conciliations, des papiers concernant des négociations, des registres de votes, des listes d'administrateurs, des conventions collectives, des décisions, des états financiers, de la littérature se rapportant à l'organisation et aux grèves, du matériel publicitaire, des imprimés, des notes et plus encore.
