Description
William Brown (c. 1737 - 1789) was a journalist and printer. In 1758, he went to work in Philadelphia for William Dunlop, who two years later entrusted him with the management of two bookshops. Eventually, Brown became interested in the city of Quebec and after he got in touch with a former co-worker, Thomas Gilmore, the two decided to go to Quebec to start a newspaper. They prepared for their business venture with the help of Dunlop, who advanced them money. The first issue of the Quebec Gazette / La Gazette de Québec was published on June 21, 1764. The Gazette was the first periodical in the Province of Quebec and wanted to inform the public of current events with impartiality. However, mention of the revolutionary events in the Thirteen Colonies was censored by Governor Guy Carleton (1724 - 1808) after 1768 and publication was suspended during the American invasion of 1775 and 1776, resuming thereafter. In addition to the newspaper, Brown and Gilmore also published the first books in Quebec, including a catechism, legal works and Abram's Plains (1789), a collection of poems by Thomas Cary. In all, Brown published about 250 or 260 works, but only eight of them ran to more than 100 pages.
This collection consists of the correspondence and accounts of William Dunlop, a Philadelphia printer to whom William Brown had been apprenticed, and includes the letterbook kept by the executors of the estate of William Brown. The collection also includes ledgers, journals, cash books, shipping books and other business records of William Brown and Thomas Gilmore.
The finding aid to the collection can be found on microfilm reel C-15618.
