Description
George Strong Nares (1831-1915) was educated at the Royal Navy College and joined the British Navy in 1848. He was the mate of H.M.S. Resolute on the Arctic expedition of 1852 and later served in Crimea. He was subsequently employed in surveying the north west coast of Australia and also saw service in the Mediterranean. While in command of the H.M.S. Challenger from 1872 to 1874, he made a voyage around the world for the purpose of deep sea exploration. In 1875, he led an Arctic expedition in H.M.S. Alert and H.M.S. Discovery and in recognition of his services was made a Knight Commander in the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a British order of chivalry. In 1878, he surveyed the Straits of Magellan.
This collection consists of a journal kept by George Strong (G. E.) Nares while in command of the H.M.S. Penguin on survey work in the Pacific. The journal concerns a voyage from Australia to Honolulu and the surveying of Fanning and Palmyra Islands between 1896 and 1898.
