The Department of Trade and Commerce, which included the Trade Commissioner Service, was created in 1892 and was combined with the Department of Industry in 1969 to form the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. A decision was made, in February 1982, by Prime Minister Pierre-Elliott Trudeau (1919 - 2000), to combine External Affairs and International Trade in a single department, initially known as the Department of External Affairs and then as External Affairs and International Trade. Today, the department is known as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
Series consists of records maintained in the 1961 central registry system of the Department of Trade And Commerce. This registry system was established in 1961 and was operative till 1966. In this system a block number is allotted to a specific branch or program. As an example, all registry files starting with number 8 were created by the Exhibitions Branch.
In many instances correspondence from the previous sequentially numbered file system was brought forward and incorporated into this system, resulting in correspondence contained therein dating back to the early 1930's. Also some files will contain correspondence beyond 1966.
