Description
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, officially branded as CBC/Radio-Canada, is a Canadian crown corporation that serves as the national public radio and television broadcaster. In 1929, the Aird Commission on public broadcasting recommended the creation of a national radio broadcast network. A major concern was the growing influence of American radio broadcasting as U.S.-based networks began to expand into Canada. In 1932, the government established the CBC’s predecessor, the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC). On November 2, 1936, the CRBC was reorganized under its present name. For the next few decades, the CBC was responsible for all broadcasting innovation in Canada. This was in part because, until 1958, it was not only a broadcaster, but the chief regulator of Canadian broadcasting. Television broadcasts from the CBC began on September 6, 1952, with the opening of a station in Montreal, Quebec (CBFT), and a station in Toronto, Ontario (CBLT) opening two days later. On July 1, 1958, CBC’s television signal was extended from coast to coast. In 1978, CBC became the first broadcaster in the world to use an orbiting satellite for television service, linking Canada "from east to west to north."
On November 10, 1958, a new Broadcasting Act created the Board of Broadcast Governors, which, in 1968, became the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC). This Board took over the regulatory functions previously exercised by the CBC Board of Governors. At the same time, the act created a CBC Board of Directors responsible for operating the national broadcasting system. The Office of the Secretary of the Board of Directors generally provides secretarial, administrative and support services to the Board of Directors of the CBC and its committees. This includes the preparation of the agendas and the gathering of the necessary working papers for the meetings of the Board and its committees. The Corporate Affairs Department has the responsibility for the Secretariat.
Microfilm reels T-3044 to T-3048 consists of the minutes, agenda books and working papers of the Board of Directors, relating mainly to the operations of the CBC. For the 1958-1972 period, the minutes of meetings are available on microfilm reels T-3044 to T-3047. Also included in this collection are the minutes, agenda books and working papers of the meetings of the Board of Directors' Executive Committee and Program Committee. These documents are available on microfilm reels T-3047 to T-3048.
Microfilm reels T-3040 to T-3045 contains the minutes, agenda books and working papers of the meetings of the Board of Governors. The working papers are memos, reports or briefs documenting the operations of the CBC in its administration of a national broadcasting system or the licence applications received by the CBC in its role as the regulatory body recommending the issuance of radio and television licences. The minutes of meetings are available on microfilm reels T-3040 to T-3042. Also included in this collection are the minutes, agenda books and working papers of the meetings of the Board of Governors' Executive Committee and Finance Committee. The minutes of meetings are available on microfilm reels T-3042 to T-3045.
