Description
The Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (HIA) is the leading Canadian centre for astronomy and astrophysics. Named for the Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg, it was formally announced in September 1974 and formed in 1975 as part of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa. Its headquarters were moved to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1995 to the site of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. By 2001, the HIA had assumed operational responsibility for all government of Canada astronomical observatories and works to ensure access to the Canadian scientific community to these.
This collection consists of reports on Non-Meteoric Sightings (more commonly known as Unidentified Flying Objects or UFOs) gathered by the Planetary Science Section of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in conjunction with its program to identify flying objects (meteors) in the earth's atmosphere. The reports are usually in the form of a telex or letter indicating who made the observation, when it was made, where it was made, what was seen, and for how long. Although the sightings are arranged in chronological order, there are several anomalies. Only the reports for the years 1965 to 1981 have been microfilmed here.
