Description In 1755, the British Crown established the British Indian Department, and responsibility for Indian Affairs rested on the Superintendents of Indian Affairs from 1755 to 1841. After 1843, the Governors General held control of Indian Affairs, but usually delegated much of their responsibility to a series of Civil Secretaries. In 1860, the responsibility for Indian affairs was transferred from the government of Great Britain to the Province of Canada and the responsibility for Indian Affairs was given to the Crown Lands Department Commissions Responsible for Indian Affairs. The responsibility for Indian Affairs rested with various government departments between 1873 and 1966. The Minister of the Interior also held the position of Superintendent General of Indian Affairs after the Indian Affairs Department was established in 1880. From 1950 to 1965, the Indian Affairs portfolio was carried by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. In October 1966, the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development was created. Today, the department is known as Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.
In 1922, the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch of the Department of the Interior was split into the Mining Lands Branch and the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch. The new Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch was given a director who reported directly to the Deputy Minister of the Interior. The Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch also received from the old Mining Lands and Yukon Branch responsibility for the inspection of mines and of petroleum and natural gas wells in the North and on the prairies. Those officials of the Yukon's local government who previously had reported since 1914 through the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch now reported through the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch. Officials of the Branch in the North were gradually changed from Mining Recorders to District Agents so that they could perform wider functions of inspection, regulation, and general administration.
This collection consists of records created and maintained by the Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch between 1894 and 1968. The records include central registry files and other material from the following offices: the central registry office, the Mining Lands Section, the Mining Supervision and Inspection Branch, the Fort Smith District Office, the Baffin Island Expedition, the Arctic Weather Station Sea Supply Mission, and the Eastern Arctic Patrol.
