Description

In September 1841, the Province of Canada legislature passed a resolution that authorized the sum of 1,500 sterling be granted to the government for the estimated expense of performing a geological survey of the province. In 1842, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was formed to fulfill this request. Today, the GSC is a branch of the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada. The GSC is responsible for performing geological surveys of the country, developing Canada's natural resources and protecting the environment. The GSC is the country's oldest scientific agency and one of its first government organizations.
This collection consists of records from the central registry filing system of the GSC. The series includes field notebooks, maps, correspondence, memoranda and reports, financial records, subject files, and material relating to the history of the organization, its members, facilities and activities compiled by the organization's staff.
Microfilm reels C-4838 to C-4847 feature finding aids at the start of their respective reels.
En septembre 1841, l'Assemblée législative de la province du Canada a adopté une résolution autorisant l'attribution d'une somme de 1,500 £ au gouvernement pour couvrir le coût estimé de réalisation d'un relevé géologique de la province. En 1842, la Commission géologique du Canada (CGC) fut créée pour remplir ce mandat. Aujourd'hui, la CGC fait partie du secteur des Sciences de la Terre du ministère des Ressources naturelles du Canada. La CGC est responsable de la collecte des données géologiques et du développement des ressources naturelles du Canada et de la protection de l'environnement. La CGC est la plus ancienne agence scientifique du Canada et l'un de ses premiers organismes gouvernementaux.
Cette collection contient les archives provenant du système de classification du Service central de la CGC. La série comprend des carnets de notes, des cartes géographiques, de la correspondance, des notes de services et des rapports, des états financiers, des dossiers-matières et des documents créés par le personnel de l'organisation, lesquels se rapportent à l'histoire de l'organisation, à ses membres, à ses installations et à ses activités.
Des instruments de recherche se trouvent au début de chacune des bobines de microfilm C-4838 à C-4847.
