Description

Until 1917, two federal departments - Agriculture, followed by the Interior - were responsible for immigration. In 1917, the Department of Immigration and Colonization was established. Since then, Immigration has existed as a separate department, except for the period from 1936 to 1949, when it was the responsibility of Mines and Resources. Today, Citizenship and Immigration Canada is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for issues dealing with immigration and citizenship. The department was established in 1994 following a reorganization within the federal government.
This collection consists of juvenile inspection report cards created by Immigration officials as they carried out regular inspection of children brought to Canada by various organizations. The inspections were conducted by departmental inspectors or individuals designated by them, such as local ministers. The eight reels in this collection consist of inspection report cards arranged in alphabetical order by child's surname. Most of the cards date from 1920 to 1932, with a few as early as 1913. Each card includes the following information: name, age or date of birth, date of arrival, name of ship, name of Home/Union, dates and results of inspections, and name and address of employer(s). Many of the cards include informative follow-up comments. Most of the children were sent to Canada by organizations in Great Britain, such as Barnardo's, Middlemore, Quarrier's, the Salvation Army, the Catholic Emigration Association and the British Immigration and Colonization Association. There are also inspection cards for European children, including those brought to Canada by the Armenian Relief Association of Canada and the Canadian Jewish War Orphans Committee.

Avant 1917, l'Immigration relevait de la responsabilité de deux ministères fédéraux – le ministère de l'Agriculture, puis celui de l'Intérieur. En 1917, le ministère de l'Immigration et de la Colonisation fut créé. Depuis lors, un ministère de l'Immigration distinct a toujours existé sauf durant les années 1936 à 1949 quand l'immigration fut placée sous la responsabilité du ministère des Mines et des Ressources. Aujourd'hui, toutes les questions touchant l'immigration et la citoyenneté relèvent du ministère de la Citoyenneté et de l'Immigration Canada créé en 1994 suite à une restructuration du gouvernement fédéral.
Cette collection se compose des fiches d'examen sur les enfants créées par les agents de l'immigration lorsqu'ils procédaient à l'évaluation périodique des enfants amenés au Canada par divers organismes. Ces inspections étaient menées par des inspecteurs ministériels ou par des particuliers désignés par eux, tels que les ministres locaux. Les huit bobines de cette collection contiennent les fiches d'examens classées en ordre alphabétique des noms de famille des enfants. La plupart des fiches datent de 1920 à 1932, mais quelques-unes remontent jusqu'à 1913. Chaque fiche comprend les informations suivantes : le nom, l'âge ou la date de naissance, la date d'arrivée, le nom du navire, le lieu de résidence ou de l'agence, les dates et les résultats des inspections, et le nom et l'adresse de la famille d'accueil. Beaucoup de ces fichent renferment des informations pour le suivi. La plupart des enfants ont été envoyés au Canada par des organismes en Grande-Bretagne comme Barnado, Middlemore, Quarrier, l'Armée du Salut, la Catholic Emigration Association et la British Immigration and Colonization Association. On y trouve aussi des fiches d'examen pour des enfants européens, dont ceux amenés au Canada par l'Armenian Relief Association of Canada et la Canadian Jewish War Orphans Committee.
