Matters of dispute between government departments and the public over contracts, property valuation, and property damages were usually settled by arbitration. The Department chose an arbitrator, a second was chosen by the claimant and together they chose a third. In 1867, three arbitrators were authorized for the Dominion of Canada and were appointed. Some 1,413 cases came before the Official Arbitrators of the Dominion of Canada until the Exchequer Court took over this function in June 1887.
This collection consists of registers of correspondence received and sent.
