Description

A branch of the Department of Agriculture, the Copyright and Trade-Mark Branch of the Canadian federal government was established to enforce the Copyright Act intended to protect the rights of the author and the first owner of copyright. Directed by the Registrar of Copyrights, the Copyright Office was the federal agency responsible for the function of registering copyrights in Canada. A copyright is defined as an original work of artistic, literary, dramatic, or musical design. It must not be copied and must involve some intellectual effort. The main functions of the Copyright Office was: registering copyrights; recording the details which were provided, and giving a certificate attesting to this fact; maintaining records of all registrations and other pertinent documents for public use. Particulars of a copyright work and its owner, as well as assignments and licences, may now be registered at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, which is associated with Industry Canada.
This collection consists of indexes to the names of those who filed for registration of copyright, and a series of title indexes which are arranged according to the nature of the work in which the copyright was registered, for example, literary, dramatic, musical and artistic. For the period prior to April 1938, only nominal indexes are available.
Une division du ministère de l’Agriculture, le Bureau du droit d’auteur et des marques de commerce du gouvernement fédéral canadien a été établi pour faire respecter la Loi sur le droit d’auteur qui avait pour objet de protéger les droits de propriété intellectuelle de l’auteur. Dirigé par le registraire du droit d’auteur, le Bureau du droit d’auteur était l’organisme fédéral responsable de l’enregistrement des droits d’auteur au Canada. Le droit d’auteur s’applique à toute œuvre originale de nature artistique, littéraire, dramatique ou musicale. Elle ne peut pas être copiée et doit comporter un certain effort intellectuel. Les principales fonctions du Bureau du droit d’auteur consistaient à enregistrer les droits d’auteur et les détails alors fournis et à délivrer un certificat attestant du fait, ainsi qu’à maintenir tous les enregistrements et autres documents pertinents destinés à l’usage du public. Les détails d’une œuvre protégée par le droit d’auteur et sur son propriétaire, ainsi que les cessions et les licences peuvent dorénavant être enregistrés à l’Office de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada qui relève d’Industrie Canada.
Cette collection est constituée des index des noms de personnes ayant présenté une demande d’enregistrement de droit d’auteur, ainsi que d’une série d’index des titres classés selon la nature de l’œuvre pour laquelle un droit d’auteur a été enregistré. Il peut s’agit, par exemple, d’une œuvre littéraire, dramatique, musicale ou artistique. Pour la période d’avant 1938, seuls des index nominatifs sont disponibles.
