Description
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment was founded in 1795 and since the province joined Confederation in 1949 it has been a militia or reserve unit of the Canadian Army. The regiment, called at the time The Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry, was significantly involved in the War of 1812. During World War One, it was also the only North American unit to fight at Suvla Bay on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. The regiment was almost decimated at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Since then, July 1 has been known as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment became the primary militia unit for the province when it joined Confederation. The regiment is ranked last in the Canadian Forces order of precedence due to Newfoundland being the final province to join Confederation. The regiment has been honoured by having a street in St. John's and a ferry named after it, and it has been memorialized in novels and a song by Atlantic folk rockers Great Big Sea ("Recruiting Sergeant").
This collection consists of personnel files created or maintained by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The series includes files relating to Canadians in the Imperial forces or British military personnel serving with the Canadian or Imperial forces as well as files relating to service in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War.
