Description

John Charles Dent (1841 - 1888) was a lawyer, journalist, author, and historian. He was born in England and immigrated with his family when he was young to Canada West, and studied law in the Brantford office of Edmund Burke Wood (1820 -1882), who was later treasurer of Ontario and chief justice of Manitoba. Dent was called to the Upper Canada bar in 1865, but he disliked practicing law and returned to England to become a journalist. In 1867, he moved to the United States. However, he was hired as an editor in 1876 at the Toronto Evening Telegram and joined the staff of the Globe the following year. He began also writing about history, and, in 1880 and 1881, he published four volumes of “The Canadian Portrait Gallery”, which contained biographical sketches of 204 leading figures in Canadian history. In 1881, he began publishing “The Last Forty Years: Canada Since the Union of 1841”, which was issued serially and consisted of 735 pages of text in two volumes. For a long time, it remained the leading account of the period in English. In 1885, he then published two volumes of “The Story of the Upper Canadian Rebellion”.
This collection contains grangerized copies of “The Canadian Portrait Gallery"and “The Last Forty Years: Canada Since the Union of 1841”, as well as newspaper clippings and correspondence.
The numbers provided by the automatic counter above each image may not always be incremental in a sequential fashion. These numbers are only a working tool meant to aid researchers in retrieval and identification. While the collection appears to be, by and large, written in English, there is a bit of French content in the correspondence.
John Charles Dent (1841-1888) était avocat, journaliste, auteur et historien. Né en Angleterre, il émigra avec sa famille au Haut-Canada alors qu'il était tout jeune. Il étudia le droit à Brantford, dans l'étude d'Edmund Burke Wood (1820-1882) qui devint plus tard trésorier de l'Ontario et juge en chef du Manitoba. En 1865, Dent fut admis au barreau du Haut-Canada, mais la pratique du droit lui ayant déplu, il retourna en Angleterre où il devint journaliste. En 1867, il s'installa aux États-Unis puis, en 1876, Dent fut désigné rédacteur en chef du Toronto Evening Telegram. L'année suivante, il entra à l'emploi du Globe. C'est alors qu'il commença à écrire des ouvrages d'histoire. En 1880 et 1881, il publia quatre volumes intitulés « The Canadian portrait gallery » qui contenaient les biographies de 204 figures marquantes de l'histoire canadienne. En 1881, il commença la publication de « The last forty years : Canada since the Union of 1841 » qui parut d'abord en feuilleton, puis en deux volumes comptant en tout 735 pages. Ce recueil demeura longtemps la meilleure chronique de l'époque publiée en langue anglaise. En 1885, il publia un autre ouvrage en deux volumes, « The story of the Upper Canada rebellion ».
Cette collection contient des exemplaires de « The Canadian portrait gallery » et de « The last forty years : Canada since the Union of 1841 » enrichies d'illustrations, ainsi que des coupures de presse et de la correspondance.
