Description

Lieutenant-General Peter Hunter (1746 - 1805) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. In 1767, he entered the British Army and rose to Lieutenant in 1770. He was eventually promoted to Captain and became a Major in the 92nd Foot in 1779. He would go to the West Indies and rise to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, transferring to the 60th Foot in 1781. His unit was posted to Nova Scotia in 1786, and he assumed command of the 4th battalion in 1787. In 1799, Hunter was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, succeeding John Graves Simcoe (1752 - 1806). Hunter was also made commander of military forces in both Upper and Lower Canada with the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1802. He became Colonel of the 9th Foot in 1804. Hunter died unexpectedly in 1805 in Quebec.
This collection consists of a commission appointing Peter Hunter to be Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in 1799, as well as civil and military letterbooks for Upper Canada between 1799 and 1805. There is a speech delivered by the Mohawks of St. Regis and Hunter's reply in 1800.

Le lieutenant général Peter Hunter (1746-1805) était un officier de l'armée britannique et un administrateur colonial. En 1767, il s'enrôla dans l'armée britannique et, en 1770, il fut promu au grade de lieutenant. Nommé capitaine, puis major en 1779 dans le 92e d'infanterie, il fut envoyé aux Antilles. En 1781, il s'était hissé au rang de lieutenant-colonel et fut muté au 60e d'infanterie. En 1786, son unité fut affectée en Nouvelle-Écosse puis, en 1787, il assuma le commandement du 4e bataillon. En 1799, Hunter fut nommé lieutenant-gouverneur du Haut-Canada, succédant à John Graves Simcoe (1752-1806). En 1802, Hunter fut promu lieutenant général et commandant des forces armées tant du Haut que du Bas-Canada. En 1804, il est devenu colonel du 9e d'infanterie. Hunter est mort subitement à Québec en 1805.
Cette collection contient la commission nommant Peter Hunter lieutenant-gouverneur du Haut-Canada en 1799, ainsi que des registres de copies de correspondance civile et militaire tenus lorsqu'il était dans le Haut-Canada entre 1799 et 1805. On y trouve aussi un discours prononcé par les Mohawks de Saint-Régis en 1800 avec la réplique de Hunter.
