Description

Simon McGillivray (1791-1840) was the son of Hon. William McGillivray (ca. 1764-1825) and nephew of Simon McGillivray (1783-1840). He entered the service of the North West Company as a clerk about 1803. He was employed for a number of years in the Athabasca department and was made a partner in the North West Company before the union of 1821. Made a chief trader in the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, he spent most of the rest of his life at Hamilton Inlet, on the Labrador coast.
This collection consists of papers relating to McGillivray's arrest and imprisonment at Fort Wedderburn under a warrant of doubtful legality. Behind the incident was the rivalry of the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company, and the desire on the part of George Simpson, the Hudson’s Bay Company's chief trader in the area, to disrupt the North West Company's operations.

Simon McGillivray (1791-1840) était le fils de l'Hon. William McGillivray (v. 1764-1825) et le neveu de Simon McGillivray (1783-1840). Vers 1803, il fut engagé comme commis à la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest comme commis. Après avoir été employé durant quelques années dans la région d'Athabasca, il devint l'un des associés de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest avant la fusion de 1821. Suite à cette fusion, il devint négociant en chef de la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson. Il passa la plus grande partie du reste de sa vie à Hamilton Inlet, un estuaire sur la côte du Labrador.
Cette collection contient les papiers se rapportant à l'arrestation et à la détention de McGillivray à Fort Wedderburn en vertu d'un mandat à la légalité douteuse. Derrière cet incident se cachait la rivalité entre la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson et la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest et la volonté de George Simpson, le négociant en chef de la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson dans la région, de perturber les opérations de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest.
