Description

Sir Gordon Drummond (1772 - 1854) was the first Canadian-born officer to command the military and the civil government of Canada. As Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Drummond distinguished himself on the Niagara front in the War of 1812 and later became Governor-General and Administrator of Canada. Aside from helping establish the peace laid down by the Treaty of Ghent, his post-war career in Canada as a civil administrator was unremarkable.
This collection consists of a letter from Sir F.P. Robinson, to Captain Loring, Secretary to Sir Gordon, regarding land arrangements for military settlements, dated 1815; and a letterbook from Drummond to Sir George Prevost or his military secretary, Captain Noah Freer, dated November 19, 1813, to December 31, 1814.

Sir Gordon Drummond (1772-1854) fut le premier officier canadien à prendre le commandement du gouvernement civil et militaire du Canada. Alors qu’il était lieutenant-gouverneur du Haut-Canada, Drummond s’est illustré à la frontière du Niagara durant la guerre de 1812. Il a, par la suite, été nommé gouverneur général et administrateur du Canada. En dehors du fait qu’il a contribué à établir la paix après la signature du traité de Gand, la carrière d’après-guerre de Drummond à titre d’administrateur civil du Canada s’est déroulée sans incident notable.
Cette collection est constituée d’une lettre de Sir F.P. Robinson rédigée en 1815 à l’intention du capitaine Loring, secrétaire de Sir Gordon, concernant les dispositions à prendre relativement aux établissements militaires. On y trouve aussi un registre de copies de lettres envoyées par Drummond, entre le 19 novembre 1813 et le 31 décembre 1814, à Sir George Prevost ou à son secrétaire militaire, le capitaine Noah Freer.
