Description

James Murray (1721/22 - 1794) was a military officer, colonial administrator, and the first British governor of Quebec. He commanded a battalion in the siege of Louisbourg in 1758, and was one of James Wolfe’s (1727 - 1759) three brigadiers at Quebec. He was sworn in as the first civil governor of Quebec on August 10, 1764. He supported the French-speaking inhabitants over the newly arrived, English-speaking merchants. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, “his willingness to allow French law and custom in the courts further alienated the merchants and led to his recall in April 1766."He left Canada in June of that year.
This collection consists of James Murray's official and private correspondence, as well as other letters and documents, including Murray’s will and correspondence with James Wolfe.
James Murray (1721/22-1794) était un officier de l’armée, un administrateur colonial et le premier gouverneur britannique de Québec. Il a commandé un bataillon lors du siège de Louisbourg en 1758, avant de devenir l’un des trois brigadiers de James Wolfe (1727-1759) à Québec. Le 10 août 1764, il a été assermenté en tant que premier gouverneur civil du Québec. Murray s’est montré conciliant à l’endroit de la population francophone face aux marchands anglais nouvellement arrivés. Dans l’Encyclopédie canadienne, on peut lire : « En permettant l’usage des lois et des coutumes françaises devant les tribunaux, il se met à dos les marchands et est bientôt rappelé en avril 1766. » Murray a quitté le Canada en juin de la même année.
Cette collection contient la correspondance officielle et privée de James Murray, ainsi que d’autres lettres et documents, dont le testament de Murray et sa correspondance avec James Wolfe.
