Description

William von Moll Berczy (1744 - 1813) was a painter, architect, author, and colonizer. Berczy was originally named Johann Albrecht Ulrich Moll, but later changed his name. Perhaps his greatest claim to fame is that he helped John Graves Simcoe (1752 - 1806) establish a settlement north of Toronto, which became the town of Markham, Ontario. After studying to be a painter, he and his wife travelled to England in 1790 and shortly thereafter, he was contracted to obtain settlers for the Genesee Association, a group of British speculators who were trying to develop a large tract of land in western New York. In May 1792, Berczy and his family sailed for America and enlisted 200 German settlers to take part in the settlement. Following a dispute with the company in 1793, Berczy took the settlers to Markham Township in Upper Canada. Starvation resulted in one-third of the settlement moving to Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) during the winter of 1795 and 1796. Berczy ended his association with the settlement in 1805 and spent his later life in Montreal, supporting himself as a painter.
These fonds consists of the papers of William Berczy, chiefly relating to the German Company and the Markham Settlement between 1792 and 1812, and some material concerned with education from 1828 to 1831. Included are draft narratives relating to the formation of the company in the Genesee District and to progress made toward settlement; lists of settlers, and contracts and agreements with settlers, 1799-1804. Of note is the "Calculation on the methods and costs of settling a tract of 10,000 acres".
The fonds offers limited information about his artistic career, but does include some commentary, marginal notes and sketches.
William von Moll Berczy (1744-1813) était un peintre, un architecte, un auteur et un colonisateur. Berczy porta d’abord le nom de Johann Albrecht Ulrich Moll, mais changea subséquemment son nom. Peut-être que sa plus grande réalisation est celle d’avoir aidé John Graves Simcoe (1752-1806) à fonder une colonie au nord de Toronto. Celle-ci donna naissance à la ville de Markham, Ontario. Une fois ses études de beaux-arts complétées, lui et son épouse se sont rendus, en 1790, en Angleterre. Peu après, la Genesee Association, un groupe de spéculateurs britanniques qui tentaient de mettre en valeur une grande superficie de terre à l’ouest de New York, l’engagea pour recruter des colons. En mai 1792, Berczy et sa famille firent voile vers l’Amérique et y recrutèrent 200 colons allemands à cette fin. Suite à un différend avec la compagnie en 1793, Berczy amena avec lui les colons dans le canton de Markham dans le Haut-Canada. La famine força le tiers des colons à déménager à Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) durant l’hiver de 1795-1796. Berczy mis fin à son association avec la colonie en 1805 et passa les dernières années de sa vie à Montréal où il vécut de son métier d’artiste peintre.
Ce fonds est constitué des papiers de William Berczy qui ont surtout trait à la compagnie allemande et à la colonie de Markham entre 1792 et 1812, ainsi que divers autres documents se rapportant à l’éducation entre 1828 et 1831. On y trouve, entre autres, des projets de textes qui relatent la formation de la compagnie dans le district de Genesee et les progrès réalisés dans l’établissement de la colonie, des listes de colons, des contrats et des ententes conclus avec les colons entre 1799 et 1804. Le document intitulé « Calculation on the methods and costs of settling a tract of 10,000 acres » mérite une mention spéciale.
Ce fonds offre des informations limitées sur sa carrière artistique, mais il contient néanmoins quelques commentaires, des notes marginales et des esquisses.
