Description
Henry Elvins Spencer (1882 - 1972) was a Canadian politician. Born in England, Spencer was a printer and publisher in Paris from 1906 to 1907 before he immigrated to Canada. He worked as a farmer in Alberta. Between 1917 to 1921, he worked as the provincial secretary of the United Farmers of Alberta. He was elected to the House of Commons for the same party in 1921 and was elected in the following three federal elections. He belonged to the Ginger Group of radical MPs and was a founding member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932. In Parliament, Spencer was secretary of the United Farmers of Alberta from 1921 to 1935 and of the Progressives from 1926 to 1935. He was defeated as a CCF candidate in 1935 and again in 1940 and 1945. He moved to Comox, British Columbia, in 1948, and lived there until his death. For a period of eight years upon moving to B.C., Spencer was secretary-treasurer of the Canadian School Trustee Association.
This collection consists of material documenting Spencer's career as a Member of Parliament and, more generally, contains papers illustrating the politics, ideas and Parliamentary actions of the United Farmers of Alberta and its role with other co-operating groups such as the Progressives. This section collects minutes, reports and correspondence, among other things. The collection also consists of material sent by Spencer to M.J. Coldwell (1888-1974) in which can be found the views of the United Farmers of Alberta, its political platforms and Parliamentary organization. There is also material documenting Spencer's activities with the Unitarian group and its role in the Comox Valley.
There is a short table of contents at the beginning of microfilm reel H-1970.
