Description

William Henry Pope (1825 - 1879) was a resident of Prince Edward Island and acted as a lawyer, politician, judge, editor of the Islander newspaper from 1859 to 1872, and, most notably, was one of the Fathers of Confederation and a supporter of uniting with Canada. He attended both the Charlottetown and the Quebec conferences, and was an honorary secretary of the latter.
This collection contains the papers of a 1860 Royal Commission that appointed Pope as Colonial Secretary of P.E.I. The remainder of the items are correspondence addressed to Pope between 1860 and 1880, and mainly deals with provincial politics between the Charlottetown Conference in 1864 and P.E.I.'s union with Canada in 1873.

William Henry Pope (1825-1879), un résident de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, était avocat, politicien, juge, rédacteur en chef du journal « The Islander » de 1859 à 1872 et, plus important encore, l'un des Pères de la Confédération qui s'est prononcé en faveur de l'union avec le Canada. Il a participé aux deux conférences de Charlottetown et de Québec et fit fonction de secrétaire honoraire à cette dernière.
Cette collection contient les papiers de la Commission royale de 1860 qui désigna Pope comme Secrétaire colonial de l'Î.P.É. Les autres documents comprennent de la correspondance adressée à Pope entre 1860 et 1880. Celle-ci se rapporte surtout à la politique provinciale entre la conférence de Charlottetown et l'union de l'Î.P.É. avec le Canada en 1873.
