Description
Charles Alexander Magrath (1860 - 1949) was a public servant, politician, and a Dominion land surveyor in the Northwest Territories; he served in the latter role between 1878 and 1885. He was the superintendent of irrigation and colonization with Sir AlexanderTilloch Galt (1817 - 1893) and Elliot Torrance Galt (1850 - 1928) in the Lethbridge area from 1885, and he later became Elliott's assistant and Land Commissioner of the North Western Coal and Navigation Company. Due to his work with the Galts, Magrath was dubbed "The Father of Irrigation in Southern Alberta", a title that he tried to play down during his lifetime, often pointing to the work of others who had helped in that regard. He also was the first mayor of Lethbridge in 1891. That same year, he became a member of the Northwest Territories Legislature, a position he held until 1898. He became a Member of Parliament representing Medicine Hat between 1908 and 1911. He was fuel Controller during World War I, and chairman of both Ontario Hydro and the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission. He also served on the Newfoundland Royal Commission of 1933 to inquire into the state of the island's finances. Today, the community of Magrath, Alberta, is named after him, and so is a major street in Lethbridge, Alberta (Mayor Magrath Drive).
These fonds consist material surrounding the Royal Commission on Newfoundland, including various departmental reports to committee members, evidence, a list of those presenting evidence, notes, newspaper clippings and other miscellaneous materials.
