Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was an English-Canadian author and naturalist. Her book "The Backwoods of Canada", written in 1836, remains an important source of information about life in early Canada.
This collection consists of the records of Catharine Parr Traill, her husband Thomas, their children, and other family members. Included are correspondence, manuscripts, genealogical notes, legal documents, clippings annotated by Traill. Also of interest are documents relating to her sister Susanna Moodie, who, in 1852, also wrote a classic in Canadian pioneer literature, "Roughing it in the bush".

FROM MAIN RECORD: Collection consists of the records of Catharine Parr Traill, her husband Thomas Traill, their children and extended family, and their descendants. Included is textual documentation on Catharine Parr Traill's sisters in England and her sister Susanna Moodie. The material has been arranged in the following series: correspondence; manuscripts and printed works; miscellaneous essays and printed material; miscellany and memorabilia; wills, deeds and related documents; clippings; family history; material copied from the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge collection.
There are three groups of manuscripts and works in print: one of works by Catharine Parr Traill; one of works by members of her extended family and descendants; and one of additional material largely comprising works by Catharine Parr Traill. The manuscripts and works in print by Catharine Parr Traill are arranged in three groups: her journals and notebooks; her literary manuscripts; and a small amount of printed material. The journals and notebooks are arranged chronologically, with transcripts prepared by Traill's biographer Sara Eaton interfiled among the originals. Some of the journals include entries by Thomas Traill and one notebook appears to have been shared by Catharine Parr Traill's sister-in-law, Katharine Rackham. As well as diary entries, the journals include biographical notes, botanical notes, notes on religious themes and spiritualism, some letter drafts, poems, and drafts of various books by Traill. Traill's literary manuscripts are arranged in six groups: miscellaneous pieces, including poems, notes and short stories; material for what appears to be a late edition of Traill's Canadian emigrant's guide; material for 'Studies of plant life in Canada'; material for 'Pearls and pebbles'; for 'Cot and cradle stories'; and for unpublished memoirs. The series includes copies of Traill's 'Sketch book of a young naturalist' (1831), 'Canadian wild flowers' (1869), and 'Infant's prayer book' (1873). The manuscripts and printed works by members of Catharine Parr Traill's extended family, including the Traills, Stricklands and Moodies, are arranged alphabetically by author, and include material by Annie Atwood, Florence Atwood, Frederick Montague De La Fosse, Mary Agnes FitzGibbon, John W. Dunbar Moodie, Hargrave Henry Muchall, Mary Muchall, G. Page, Frances Stewart, Agnes Strickland, Jane Strickland, Samuel Strickland and the Reverend G. Warren. Some of the manuscripts are transcripts of works by Catharine Parr Traill. Included are some clippings of works in print. The additional manuscripts largely comprise works by Catharine Parr Traill, including material for 'Studies of plant life in Canada', 'Pearls and pebbles' and 'Cot and cradle stories', but also include one Florence Atwood manuscript and some miscellaneous material. See also the Correspondence series, for manuscripts by William Edward Traill.
Included is thecorrespondence exchanged between Catharine Parr Traill and her sisters, her correspondence with other members of the extended Traill family, and correspondence received by some of her descendants. The correspondence is arranged in five groupings: correspondence received by Catharine Parr Traill; some miscellaneous letter drafts by Traill; correspondence about a testimonial fund established for Traill in 1898; correspondence received by various members of the extended Traill family, including letters to them from Catharine Parr Traill, and some correspondence received by her descendants; and additional correspondence which includes both letters received by Catharine Parr Traill and letters received by members of her extended family. The correspondence series also includes three sub-series: correspondence from William Edward Traill and Walter John Strickland Traill, along with related documents of William Traill's concerning the Hudson's Bay Company; correspondence from Walter John Strickland Traill to Annie and Clinton Atwood; and correspondence on microfilm reel A-809 from Thomas Traill along with some related material. The correspondence received by Catharine Parr Traill is arranged in five groupings: general correspondence; correspondence from James Fletcher of the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa; correspondence from Traill's sisters in England (Agnes Strickland, Elizabeth Strickland, Jane Strickland, and Sarah Gwillym); correspondence from Susanna Moodie; and correspondence from the Methodist Book and Publishing House (with drafts of some letters by Traill). The general correspondence to Traill includes letters from Frances Stewart, John Garland, Colonel Brown and Agnes Chamberlin, Goldwin Smith, W. Kirby, Mary Agnes FitzGibbon, Geraldine Moodie, Sir Sandford Fleming, Thomas O'Hagan, Ishbel Aberdeen and John Lowe. The correspondence relating to the testimonial fund established for Catharine Parr Traill in 1898 largely comprises letters to organizer Sir Sandford Fleming from colleagues and contributors. Among the correspondents are Agnes Chamberlin, Ishbel Aberdeen, William Briggs, J.M. LeMoine, Adeline Van Horne, S.E. Dawson, Andrew T. Drummond, John Fletcher and John Lowe. The correspondence received by various members of Traill's extended family include Traill's own letters to her sisters Susanna Moodie and Sarah Gwillym, to her friend Frances Stewart and to Stewart's daughter, Ellen Dunlop, and to other recipients. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by recipients, who include members of the Atwood and Muchall families. Among the letters are ones written by Frances Stewart, Susanna Moodie, Elizabeth Strickland, Jane Strickland, Agnes Strickland, Agnes Chamberlin, Sydney Tully and Thomas Traill. The additional correspondence is also arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The recipients include Ellen Dunlop, Canon Richard Gwillym, Catharine Parr Traill, George Traill, James Traill, Katherine Agnes Strickland Traill, Katherine Parr Traill, Thomas Traill and William Edward Traill, among others. The additional correspondence includes many letters written by Catharine Parr Traill, as well as some letters from the Strickland sisters in England and from Susanna Moodie.
