Description
Members of the Ermatinger family and their business associates were, throughout the mid to late 1700s and early to mid 1800s, prominent figures in trade and industry, particularly in the colony of Quebec and, later, Lower Canada. Lawrence Ermatinger (d. 1789) was a Swiss merchant who came to Montreal after the Conquest and became a fur trader. He was also involved in the financing of business partnerships such as with Forrest Oakes (d. 1783), his brother-in-law. Ermatinger's son, Frederick William (c. 1769 - 1827), would succeed his uncle, Edward William Gray (1742 - 1810), as Sheriff of Montreal from 1811 onward, and would become a founder of the Bank of Montreal in 1817. He was also the executor of the estate of merchant Samuel Jacobs (d. 1786). Upon Frederick's death, his brother Charles Oakes Ermatinger (1776 - 1833) and Samuel Gale (1783 - 1865), a lawyer and judge, became executors of the Jacobs estate. Charles' son, Charles Oakes Ermatinger, Jr. (1802 - 1857) settled at St. Thomas, Upper Canada, and served with the Hudson's Bay Company from 1818 to 1830. Edward Ermatinger (1797 - 1876) was a grandson of Lawrence Ermatinger, and was a Canadian fur trader, businessman and political figure. His brother, Francis Ermatinger (1798 - ca. 1857), worked with the Hudson's Bay Company from 1818 to 1853, mainly on the Pacific coast.
This series of fonds consists of the Jacobs-Ermatinger estate papers, which details the economic history of Lower Canada, the fur trade and general business dealings. Included are business records such as day books, journals, ledgers, waste books, cash books, vouchers, bills of exchange, receipts, engagements, correspondence, account statements, wills, powers of attorney, procès-verbaux and various other legal papers relating to court settlements of business disputes. This collection also houses records of the Sheriff's Office of Montreal.
Collection documents are either written in English or French.
