Description

Lieutenant-Colonel John By (1779 - 1836) was a British military engineer who supervised the construction of the Rideau Canal between 1826 and 1832, and, in the process of building it, was the founder of Bytown, which would later become the city of Ottawa, Ontario.
These fonds are made up of documents concerning the John By estate, including the account book of the trustees for the sale of the estate, a petition of right, a surveyor's report, a judgement by Chief Justice Sir W.B. Richards and two ledger books listing accounts with heirs. Most documents here are from the mid- to late 19th century.
