Description
Arnold Cantwell Smith was an international statesman, educator and diplomat. His career brought him to Estonia, Cairo, Moscow, Ottawa, Brussels, London, and other locations. He was the first Secretary-General to the Commonwealth Secretariat. He also held other diplomatic positions over the course of his career. This fonds holds papers from his term as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, his career with the Canadian Department of External Affairs, his teaching, writing and advocacy work after retirement.
Arnold Cantwell Smith était un homme d'État, un éducateur et un diplomate international. Sa carrière l'a amené en Estonie, au Caire, à Moscou, à Ottawa, à Bruxelles, à Londres et dans d'autres endroits. Il a été le premier secrétaire général du Secrétariat du Commonwealth. Fonds consists of textual records, n.d., 1932-1991, that document Arnold Smith's public career as a diplomat and educator and aspects of his personal life. The papers provide extensive coverage of his ten year term as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, including copies of most papers written or received by him during these years, as well as Commonwealth reports, his speeches, appointment books and press clippings. Smith's papers also document his career with the Canadian Department of External Affairs, especially his years in Moscow and Cairo, his teaching, writing and advocacy work after retirement, and shed light on the personal life and beliefs of a prominent Canadian.
