Description
In January 1884, a meeting of some 50 photographers across Ontario was convened in Toronto to establish a large scale association of photographers in Canada. Thus, the Photographers Association of Canada was founded, and the organization sought to establish standard prices for its members' work. The group hoped that by upgrading the standard of photography it would reduce the number of fly-by-night photographers who sold poor quality work at cut-rate prices. Aspiring "to improve the science and art of photography by diffusing scientific knowledge among its members," the association held annual conventions where guest speakers lectured on the problems of photographic technique or demonstrated new products and methods. To better represent the scope of its membership, the association changed its name in 1921 to the Ontario Society of Photographers, as most of its members were based in that province. During the Second World War, the Society drew up a Code of Conduct by which each member pledged to adhere to the Constitution and Bylaws of the Society, to avoid unfair competitive practices such as discount prices and the use of coupons, to refrain from copying another member's work and to maintain a high standard of professionalism in their work and business affairs. In May 1961, the association's name was changed yet again to the Professional Photographers of Ontario. The group would change its name once more in November 2009 to the Professional Photographers of Canada - Ontario (PPOC-ON). This most recent change in name is an attempt to create a stronger national marketing presence.
Photographer Frank Wright (1908 - 1976) was born in Hamilton, Ontario. During World War II, he worked in ammunitions at Canadian Westinghouse and the United-Carr Fastener Company of Canada. Following an industrial accident, Wright freelanced for the Toronto Telegram before establishing his own photography studio, the Frank Wright Photography Studio, in Burlington, Ontario. He was a member of the Commercial and Press Photographers Association of Canada and of the Professional Photographers of Ontario. He was president of the latter from 1965 to 1967 and became custodian of its records, including those of its predecessors, the Photographic Association of Canada and Professional Photographers of Ontario.
These fonds consist of the minutes of the Photographers Association of Canada and its successor, the Ontario Society of Photographers, as well as some minutes of the Professional Photographers of Ontario. The records cover the period between 1884 to February 1965.
