Description

Robert Lorne Stanfield (1914 - 2003) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia in 1948, and served as Premier of the province from 1956 to 1967. He led reforms in education, municipal government and health care, and also created Industrial Estates Limited, a crown corporation that successfully attracted investment from world companies. He was elected leader of the federal Progressive Conservative Party in 1967, and served as official Leader of the Opposition from 1967 to 1975, and, in that role, was a supporter of official bilingualism. From 1983 to 1987, he was chairman of the Institute for Research on Public Policy and, in 1986, he was appointed the first Canadian chairman of the Commonwealth Foundation, heading that organization until 1991. Stanfield was bestowed the title Right Honourable by the Queen, one of the few Canadians to have been so honoured who were not so entitled by virtue of an office held.

Robert Lorne Stanfield (1914-2003) était un avocat et un homme politique canadien. Élu chef du Parti progressiste-conservateur de la Nouvelle-Écosse en 1948, il a servi comme premier ministre de cette province de 1956 à 1967. Il a introduit des réformes dans les domaines de l'éducation, du gouvernement municipal et des soins de la santé. Il a aussi créé l'Industrial Estates Limited, une société d'État ayant réussi à attirer les investissements de compagnies étrangères. En 1967, il fut élu chef du Parti progressiste-conservateur du Canada et chef de l'Opposition officielle de 1967 à 1975. À ce titre, il a appuyé les principes du bilinguisme officiel. De 1983 à 1987, il fut président de l'Institut de recherche en politiques publiques (Institute for Research on Public Policy), puis, en 1986, il est devenu le premier Canadien à siéger comme président de la Fondation du Commonwealth, organisme qu'il dirigea jusqu'en 1991. Stanfield est l'un des rares Canadiens à avoir reçu de la reine le titre de « Très Honorable » sans y être autorisé en vertu du poste qu'il occupait.
