Description

British-born Francis Goring (1755-1842) emigrated to Canada in 1776, settling in the Niagara area. He took on a variety of jobs: partner in a trading firm; farming; tutoring (in 1792 he opened one of the first school in the Niagara district); land agent; and secretary to member of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada, Robert Hamilton.
This collection contains correspondence and other miscellaneous papers, as well as notebooks covering the years 1790 to 1803, outlining house and farm expenses, crops planted, lists of his students, etc.
Natif du Royaume-Uni, Francis Goring (1755-1842) a émigré au Canada en 1776 et s'est établi dans la région du Niagara. Il exerça diverses occupations : partenaire dans une entreprise commerciale, agriculteur, instituteur (en 1792, il a ouvert l'une des premières écoles du district du Niagara), agent des terres, et enfin secrétaire de Robert Hamilton, membre du Conseil législatif du Haut-Canada.
Cette collection contient de la correspondance et divers autres papiers, ainsi que des carnets de notes couvrant la période de 1790 à 1803 dans lesquels sont inscrites des dépenses liées à sa maison et à sa ferme, ses semences, des listes d'élèves, etc.

From record: Fonds consists of correspondence, 1777-1789, as clerk to Thomas Robison and later as clerk for George Forsyth and Edward Pollard; with a list of artificers brought to Quebec by Gabriel Christie, 1776, a statement of services performed by Goring for Robert Hamilton of Queenston, U.C., 1800-1810, and a petition for a deed to land, 1833 [178 pages]. Also included are notebooks, 1790-1803, n.d., containing house and farm expenses, accounts, poems, short stories and maxims (on microfilm only).
