James Shaver Woodsworth (1874 - 1942) was a Canadian Methodist minister and a politician, and is considered to be a pioneer in the Canadian social democratic movement. He was ordained a minister in 1896 and spent two years as a circuit preacher in Manitoba before going to study at the University of Toronto and Oxford University in England. In 1902, he returned to Canada and took a position as minister at Grace Church in Winnipeg. He was director of the All People's Mission from 1908 to 1913. He ministered to the poor and the working class, and saw appalling conditions in which his fellow citizens lived. This led him to write a number of books that still remain basic reading on the history of social practice and reform in Canada: “Strangers Within Our Gates"in 1909, “My Neighbour"in 1911 and “Studies in Rural Citizenship"in 1915. In 1913, Woodsworth accepted an appointment as Secretary of the Canadian Welfare League, and between 1915 and 1917, he served as director of the Bureau of Social Research for the governments of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. In 1921, he was elected to the House of Commons as an independent labour candidate for Winnipeg North Centre, and he continued to represent that riding until his death in 1942. He was one of the founders of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (which was the forerunner to the New Democratic Party) in 1932 during the Great Depression and was its leader until his resignation in 1940.
The fonds include correspondence, subject files, reports of the Bureau of Social Research, printed material, souvenirs, personal papers and scrapbooks.
Original correspondence and memoranda have been removed from some of the scrapbooks.
James Shaver Woodsworth (1874-1942) était un pasteur méthodiste et un homme politique canadien. Il est considéré comme un pionnier du mouvement social-démocrate canadien. Ordonné pasteur en 1896, il travailla comme pasteur itinérant au Manitoba durant deux ans avant de poursuivre ses études à la University of Toronto, puis en Angleterre à la Oxford University. De retour au Canada en 1902, il accepta un poste de pasteur au Grace Church de Winnipeg. De 1908 à 1913, il a assumé la direction de la mission All People's où il a œuvré auprès des pauvres et de la classe ouvrière. Après avoir constaté les conditions affreuses dans lesquelles vivaient ses concitoyens, il s'est lancé dans l'écriture de livres qui demeurent encore de nos jours des ouvrages de base sur l'histoire tant de la pratique que de la réforme sociale au Canada : « Strangers Within Our Gates » en 1909, « My Neighbour » en 1911 et « Studies in Rural Citizenship » en 1915. En 1913, Woodsworth accepta le poste de secrétaire de la Canadian Welfare League puis, entre 1915 et 1917, il fut engagé par les gouvernements du Manitoba, de la Saskatchewan et de l'Alberta à titre de directeur du Bureau de la recherche sociale (Bureau of Social Research). En 1921, il fut élu à la Chambre des communes en tant que député du Parti ouvrier indépendant pour la circonscription de Winnipeg Centre-Nord. Il a conservé son siège jusqu'à sa mort en 1942. En 1932, durant la Grande Dépression, Woodsworth participa à la fondation de la Fédération du Commonwealth coopératif (le précurseur du Nouveau Parti démocratique) et en devint le chef jusqu'à ce qu'il démissionne en 1940.
Ce fonds regroupe de la correspondance, des dossiers thématiques et des rapports du Bureau de la recherche sociale, ainsi que des imprimés, des souvenirs, des papiers personnels et des albums de souvenirs.
La correspondance originale et les mémorandums ont été retirés de quelques albums de souvenirs.
