Description
The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), Canada's largest and most influential labour federation, was formed in 1956 by the merger of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada (TLC) and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). As of 2013, it represented the interests of over 3 million affiliated workers. The CLC is the umbrella organization for dozens of affiliated Canadian and international unions, as well as provincial federations of labour and regional labour councils.
William Dodge was executive vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) from 1958 to 1968 and then secretary-treasurer of the organization from 1968 to 1974. As a senior CLC officer, Dodge was involved in several national labour issues. He established the CLC's White Collar Organizing Committee, which he supervised for several years. He was made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1974.
This collection consists of files created in Dodge's work at the CLC from 1954 to 1974. The documents relate to areas such as: strikes, policy on international unions, merger discussions with the Confederation of National Trade Unions, jurisdictional questions, legislative and public policy matters, human rights, international affairs. Included are committee minutes, Dodge's speeches and personal correspondence and general administrative records, as well as publicity materials.
