Description
The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), Canada's largest and most influential labour federation, was formed in 1956 by the merger of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada (TLC) and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). As of 2013, it represented the interests of over 3 million affiliated workers. The CLC is the umbrella organization for dozens of affiliated Canadian and international unions, as well as provincial federations of labour and regional labour councils.
The collection consists of files of the International Affairs Department documenting the CLC's international activities and relations. The Department was established at the CLC's founding in 1956 and is responsible for implementing CLC policies that are international in scope and establishing links with labour movements in other countries. Topics covered in the collection include: CLC participation in international organizations, such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation Development, the International Labour Organization, and the International Labour Office; Canadian government agencies and departments dealing with international issues; political, social, and human rights issues in other countries; Canadian foreign and defence policy, and related topics such as nuclear disarmament and the Law of the Sea, and Canadian organizations with an international dimension, such as Oxfam and the United Nations Association in Canada.
