Description

John Galt (1779-1839) was a Scottish novelist and founder of the Canada Company. Asked to help people in Upper Canada who sought compensation for losses in the War of 1812, he had the idea of promoting British settlement in Canada through a land speculation company. The company, known as the Canada Company, was founded in 1825, and Galt came to Canada in 1826. Due to difficulties with the directors of the company, he was fired in 1829 and returned to England. He was the father of Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, who was a politician and Father of Confederation.
This collection is made up of correspondence relating to the payment of Canadian claims for losses during the war of 1812, including an extract from the Upper Canada Gazette from 1823. Miscellaneous papers and an unpublished manuscript are also included.
There is a short subject index at the start of microfilm reels C-3897 and C-3898.
John Galt (1779-1839) était un romancier écossais et le fondateur de la Canada Company. Il reçut pour mission d'aider la population du Haut-Canada à obtenir réparation pour les pertes subies durant la guerre de 1812. Il eut alors l'idée de promouvoir la colonisation britannique du Canada au moyen d'une compagnie de spéculation foncière. La Compagnie, connue sous le nom de Canada Company, fut fondée en 1825. Galt lui-même arriva au Canada en 1826 mais, suite à des désaccords avec les administrateurs de la Compagnie, il fut congédié en 1829 et retourna en Angleterre. Il était le père de sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, un homme politique et l'un des Pères de la Confédération.
Cette collection est composée de correspondance relative au paiement des indemnités canadiennes réclamées pour les pertes subies durant la guerre de 1812, ainsi que d'un extrait de l'Upper Canada Gazette daté de 1823. On y trouve aussi divers autres papiers et manuscrits non publiés.
