Description

James Pringle (1784 - 1860) joined the 81st Regiment in 1809 and was stationed in Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitchington and Eastbourne. He then served in Jersey, 1812, and in Spain, 1813. He subsequently immigrated to Canada and served with the Cornwall Militia, in such positions as Clerk of the Land Board for the Eastern District, Upper Canada, 1819-1823, and Clerk of the Peace at Cornwall, 1838-1839.
This collection consists of documents numbered from 1 to 43, being correspondence, several marked "true copies", from the Private Secretary of the Lieutenant Governor and the Surveyor General of Upper Canada to the Chairman and Clerk of the Land Board of the Eastern and Ottawa District, dating from 1819 to 1823. They include the Rules and Regulations for Land Boards and appointments for members of the Land Board, Eastern District; and correspondence regarding settlement of the Ottawa District townships of Plantagenet, Gloucester, Cumberland and Clarence.

James Pringle (1784-1860) s’est enrôlé dans le 81e régiment en 1809 et fut posté à Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitcheington et Eastbourne. Il a ensuite servi dans le Jersey en 1812, puis en Espagne en 1813. Il immigra par après au Canada où il a servi dans la milice de Cornwall. Il y occupa aussi les fonctions de greffier du Conseil des terres dans le district de l’Est du Haut-Canada entre 1819 et 1823, et de greffier de la paix à Cornwall en 1838-1839.
Cette collection est constituée de documents numérotés de 1 à 43. Il s’agit de lettres datées de 1819 à 1823, et dont plusieurs portent la mention « copies certifiées ». Elles proviennent du secrétaire privé du lieutenant-gouverneur et de l’arpenteur général du Haut-Canada et sont adressées au président et au greffier du Conseil des terres du district de l’Est et d’Ottawa. On y trouve aussi des règles et règlementations pour les Conseils de terres, des nominations de membres pour le Conseil des terres du district de l’Est, ainsi que de la correspondance concernant la colonisation des cantons de Plantagenet, Gloucester, Cumberland et Clarence du district d’Ottawa.
