Description

James Pringle (1784 - 1860) joined the 81st Regiment in 1809 and was stationed in Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitchington and Eastbourne. He then served in Jersey, 1812, and in Spain, 1813. He subsequently immigrated to Canada and served with the Cornwall Militia, in such positions as Clerk of the Land Board for the Eastern District, Upper Canada, 1819-1823, and Clerk of the Peace at Cornwall, 1838-1839.
This collection consists of correspondence, pay lists and rolls of the Company of Cornwall Volunteer Artillery; printed District General Orders; reports, notes and accounts, from the formation of the Cornwall Artillery Company on January 15, 1839, to its disbandment May 29, 1839. The collection also consists of unpaginated notebooks: General Principles for Exercises with Artillery ca. 1838; Roll Call names, 1839; artillery instructions, April 1839; and orderly book, 1838-1846; 1866.

James Pringle (1784-1860) s’est enrôlé dans le 81e régiment en 1809 et fut posté à Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitcheington et Eastbourne. Il a ensuite servi dans le Jersey en 1812, puis en Espagne en 1813. Il immigra par après au Canada où il a servi dans la milice de Cornwall. Il y occupa aussi les fonctions de greffier du Conseil des terres dans le district de l’Est du Haut-Canada entre 1819 et 1823, et de greffier de la paix à Cornwall en 1838-1839.
Cette collection est constituée de correspondance, de listes de paye et de feuilles d’appel pour la Compagnie d’artillerie volontaire de Cornwall, d’ordres généraux imprimés pour le district, de rapports, de notes et de comptes couvrant la période depuis la formation de la Compagnie d’artillerie de Cornwall le 15 janvier 1839 jusqu’à son démembrement le 29 mai 1839. La collection comprend aussi des carnets de notes non paginés dont l’un est intitulé ‘General Principles for Exercises with Artillery’ (vers 1838), alors que les autres sont constitués de listes par appel nominal (1839), d’instructions pour l’artillerie (avril 1839) et d’un livre d’officiers (1838-1846, 1866).
