Description

James Pringle (1784 - 1860) joined the 81st Regiment in 1809 and was stationed in Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitchington and Eastbourne. He then served in Jersey, 1812, and in Spain, 1813. He subsequently immigrated to Canada and served with the Cornwall Militia, in such positions as Clerk of the Land Board for the Eastern District, Upper Canada, 1819-1823, and Clerk of the Peace at Cornwall, 1838-1839.
This collection consists of a notebook entitled "Value of Masts and Yards" containing ten miniature colour sketches. The volume is apparently not in the hand of James Pringle and may have been acquired during his military service in the Peninsula War.

James Pringle (1784-1860) s’est enrôlé dans le 81e régiment en 1809 et fut posté à Shorncliff, Beyhill, Bleitcheington et Eastbourne. Il a ensuite servi dans le Jersey en 1812, puis en Espagne en 1813. Il immigra par après au Canada où il a servi dans la milice de Cornwall. Il y occupa aussi les fonctions de greffier du Conseil des terres dans le district de l’Est du Haut-Canada entre 1819 et 1823, et de greffier de la paix à Cornwall en 1838-1839.
Cette collection se compose d’un carnet de notes intitulé « Value of Masts and Yards », lequel contient dix croquis couleur miniatures qui ne semblent pas avoir été réalisés par James Pringle. Il l’aurait possiblement acquis lors de son service militaire durant la guerre d’indépendance espagnole.
