Description

The Reverend Mather Byles, Jr., (1734 - 1814) graduated from Harvard University in 1751 and became a Congregationalist minister in New London, Connecticut, prior to his ordination in the Church of England in 1768. That year, he entered the Established Church and became rector of Christ Church in Boston. In 1776, during the American War of Independence, he sympathized with the British cause and fled from Boston to Halifax where he served as a garrison chaplain until 1789. Then, he became rector of Trinity Church in Saint John, New Brunswick, which is where he served until his death. His half sisters Mary and Catherine stayed in Boston but remained obstinate loyalists.
This collection is made up of correspondence of the Reverend Mather Byles, Jr. and his family with his half sisters Mary and Catherine of Boston.

Le révérend Mather Byles, fils, (1734-1814), diplômé de l'Université Harvard en 1751, est devenu pasteur congrégationniste à New London, Connecticut, avant d'être ordonné prêtre de l'Église anglicane en 1768. La même année, il joignit les rangs de l'Église nationale et devint recteur de Christ Church, à Boston. En 1776, durant la guerre de l'indépendance américaine, il se montra sympathique à la cause britannique et s'est enfui de Boston pour s'établir à Halifax où il servit comme aumônier de garnison jusqu'en 1789. Par la suite, il devint recteur de Trinity Church, à Saint John, Nouveau-Brunswick, où il a servi jusqu'à sa mort. Bien qu'elles soient des Loyalistes convaincus, ses demi-sœurs Mary et Catherine sont demeurées à Boston.
