Description

The Canadian Seamen's Union was established in 1936 to improve the archaic working conditions and wages for ordinary commercial seamen. Affiliated to the Trades and Labor Congress (TLC), this communist-led industrial union gained concessions, and was recognized as a collective-bargaining agent for ordinary seamen, and fought unsuccessfully to retain Canada's merchant fleet, the Western world's fourth largest. The union was stripped of its union status and disaffiliated by the TLC in 1950 during the red scare and an ill-timed union strike in 1949.
This collection consists of: National Seamen's Union Bulletin No, 1, News of the Water Transport Workers of the St Lawrence and the Great Lakes, 1936; CSU mimeographed bulletin, late 1936 or early 1937, (1st page missing); Searchlight, organ of the CSU, Vol. 1, No. 1 - Vol. 3, No. 12, July 1937 to December 1939.
La Canadian Seamen’s Union (CSU) a été créée en 1936 dans le but d’améliorer les conditions de travail et salariales devenues archaïques pour les marins de la marine marchande. Affilié au Congrès des métiers et du travail (CMT), ce syndicat industriel dirigé par les communistes a obtenu des concessions et a été reconnu comme un agent de négociation collective pour les marins ordinaires. Il s’est battu, sans succès, pour la conservation de la flotte marchande du Canada, la quatrième en importance dans le monde occidental. Suite à une grève sans précédent de ce syndicat en 1949, il s’est vu retirer son statut syndical et a été désaffilié du CMT en 1950, au moment de la « peur rouge ».
Cette collection comprend le Bulletin no. 1, News of the Water Transport Workers of the St Lawrence and the Great Lakes, publié par la Canadian Seamen’s Union en 1936; le CSU Mimeographed Bulletin, fin 1936 ou début 1937 (la première page manque); et Searchlight, l’organe de la CSU, vol. 1, no. 1 au vol. 3, no. 12, juillet 1937 à décembre 1939.
