Description

Frank Hawkins Underhill (1889 - 1971) was a journalist, essayist, historian, social critic and political thinker. He taught history at the University of Saskatchewan from 1914 to 1927 (with an interruption during World War One where he served as an officer on the Western Front for the British), and the University of Toronto from 1927 to 1955. He taught afterwards at Carleton University, where he became Chair of the Department of History. During the Great Depression, Underhill joined several other left wing academics in forming the League for Social Reconstruction. He was also a founder of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and helped write its Regina Manifesto in 1933. He joined the editorial staff of the leftist Canadian Forum in 1927. He published books of essays throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, and, in 1967, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
This collection consists subject files containing notes, copies of documents, preliminary drafts of several chapters of a proposed biography of 19th century Canadian lawyer and politician Edward Blake written by Underhill and about two hundred letters written by or to Blake.
Frank Hawkins Underhill (1889-1971) était un journaliste, un essayiste, un historien, un critique social et un théoricien politique canadien. Il a enseigné l'histoire à l'Université de la Saskatchewan de 1914 à 1927 (avec une interruption durant la Première Guerre mondiale alors qu'il a servi comme officier des forces britanniques sur le front occidentale), puis à l'Université de Toronto de 1927 à 1955. Il a ensuite enseigné à l'Université de Carleton où il fut nommé directeur du département d'histoire. Durant la Grande Crise, Underhill s'est associé à plusieurs autres intellectuels de gauche pour former la Ligue pour la reconstruction sociale. Il fut aussi l'un des fondateurs de la Fédération du commonwealth coopératif et participa, en 1933, à la rédaction du Manifeste de Regina. En 1927, il s'est joint à l'équipe de rédaction du Canadian Forum, une publication de la gauche. Durant les années 1950 et 1960, il a publié plusieurs recueils d'essais et, en 1967, il a été fait Officier de l'Ordre du Canada.
Cette collection est composée de dossiers thématiques contenant des notes, des copies de documents, des versions préliminaires de quelques chapitres d'une biographie qu'il projetait d'écrire sur Edward Blake, un avocat et politicien canadien du XIXe siècle, ainsi que d'environ deux cents lettres reçues ou envoyées à Blake.
