Description

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, despatches formed the official channel of communication between the governors in British North America and the Colonial Office in London. This collection consists of despatches from the Colonial Office to the Governors and Administrators of Quebec, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, the Province of Canada and the Dominion of Canada from 1784-1909. The despatches relate to all aspects of colonial administration, and include numbered despatches, circular despatches, military despatches, and many of the secret and confidential despatches written before 1867. Very few despatches antedating 1800 have survived.
Au cours des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, les dépêches constituaient la voie officielle de communication entre les gouverneurs de l'Amérique du Nord britannique et le Bureau colonial à Londres. Finding aid 7-1 is a typed set of chronological registers and alphabetical indexes for the Despatches. These registers and indexes are available on microfilm reels T-4164 to T-4169.
This item contains despatches, relating to all aspects of colonial administration, received from the Colonial Office by the Governors and Administrators of Quebec, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, the Province of Canada, and the Dominion of Canada, 1784-1909.
By custom, two copies of each despatch were signed and sent out; the text was also recorded in entry books. Filing practices varied over time, such that circular and secret or confidential despatches may be filed with or apart from the primary series. Personal correspondence supplemented the formal channel, but was not recorded officially.
