In this collection can be found drafts of despatches to the Colonial Office from the offices of the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Governor of Quebec and Lower Canada, Governor-in-Chief of the Province of Canada, and Governor General of the Dominion of Canada. The years 1790-1913 are covered.
Dans cette collection se trouve des brouillons de dépêches expédiées au bureau colonial par les bureaux du lieutenant-gouverneur du Haut-Canada, du gouverneur de Québec et du Bas-Canada, du gouverneur en chef de la province du Canada et du gouverneur général du Dominion du Canada. La collection couvre la période 1790-1913.
This collection consists of drafts of numbered and unnumbered (Confidential) despatches to the Secretary of State from the Governor-in-Chief of the Province of Canada. The text or an abstract of enclosures is included. Some volumes include fair copies of final drafts and not, as is the usual practice, preliminary drafts from which the final copies were made.
The final texts are to be found in the two series Colonial Office 42, Canada, formerly British North America, Original Correspondence (MG11-CO42) and Colonial Office 537, Supplementary, Original Correspondence (MG11-CO537), both of which are found within the Colonial Office fonds. Some drafts and copies have been found separated from the colonial records, in the private papers of certain Governors. See Mikan # 104569
