Description

This collection, part of the records of the Office of the Governor General of Canada, consists of despatches and enclosures sent from the British Minister at Washington to the Governor-in-Chief of Lower Canada and the Province of Canada, 1812-1866. Also included are records sent from other foreign diplomats. Topics covered include many aspects of Canada's relations with the United States: regulation of commerce, international boundaries, duties, fishing disputes, treaty negociations, the destruction of the SS Caroline, passport regulations, the Fenian raids, etc.
Constituant une partie des dossiers du bureau du gouverneur général du Canada, cette collection comprend des dépêches avec pièces jointes envoyées entre 1812 et 1866 par le ministre britannique à Washington au gouverneur en chef du Bas-Canada et de la province du Canada. Nous y trouvons aussi des documents expédiés par d'autres diplomates étrangers. Les sujets touchent plusieurs aspects des relations entre le Canada et les États-Unis : réglementation du commerce, frontières internationales, droits de douane, litiges concernant la pêche, négociations de traités, destruction du SS Caroline, réglementation des passeports, raids des Fenians, etc.

David W. Parker's Guide to the Documents in the Manuscript Room of the Public Archives of Canada, vol. 1, pages 41-44, provides a volume by volume description of vols. 2-17 of this sub-series (using Parker's now superseded designation of the records as "G" Series, vols. 222-239).
Finding aid MSS690 provides a conversion list of Parker's now obsolete "G" Series references.
Reel C-3895 contains only extracts of volumes 9-10 for complete volumes see C-15627.
