In 1938 he became secretary for the British delegation to the British Commonwealth Relations Conference meeting in Australia. He joined the British Army in 1939 and while serving in Greece in 1941 was severely wounded and taken prisoner of war. He was released in 1944 and discharged from the Army in 1946. Lioned served as an executive for the Massey-Harris Company before becoming secretary to the Governor-General with his father's appointment in 1952. He died in 1965.
These fonds include correspondence to Lionel Massey, while a student at Balloil College, Oxford University, during his period as the British press secretary, to the British Commonwealth Relations Conference in Australia, 1938, and his post-conference tour. There is considerable correspondence for the Second World War period when he was a prisoner of war, in addition to letters on family and Massey-Harris related matters.
Many of the letters on family discuss the ongoing mental illness of Lionel’s wife Lilias, who was hospitalized many times in Guelph, Ontario. She underwent shock-therapy treatment for bouts of hallucination and disillusionment.
